Synchrotron Emission from Elliptical Galaxies Consequent to Agn Outbursts

چکیده
Both radiative and mechanical feedback from Active Galactic Nuclei have been found to be important for the evolution of elliptical galaxies. We compute how a shock may be driven from a central black hole into the gaseous envelope of an elliptical galaxy by mechanical as well as radiative feedback (in the form of nuclear winds) using high resolution 1-D hydrodynamical simulations. We calculate the synchrotron emission from the electron cosmic rays accelerated by the shocks (not the jets) in the central part of elliptical galaxies, and we also study the synchrotron spectrum’s evolution using the standard diffusive shock acceleration mechanism, which is routinely applied to the scaled volume case of supernova remnants. We find good agreement quantitatively between the synchrotron radio emission produced via this mechanism with extant observations of elliptical galaxies which are undergoing outbursts. Additionally, we also find that synchrotron optical and X-ray emission can co-exist inside elliptical galaxies during a certain phase of evolution subsequent to central outbursts. In fact, our calculations predict a synchrotron luminosity of ∼ 1.3 × 10 L⊙ at the frequency 5 GHz (radio band), of ∼ 1.1× 10 L⊙ at 4.3× 10 Hz (R band, corresponding to the absolute magnitude -10.4), and of ∼ 1.5× 10 L⊙ at 2.4× 10 Hz (soft X-ray, 0.5 — 2.0 keV band). AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملRadio Mode Outbursts in Giant Elliptical Galaxies
Outbursts from active galactic nuclei (AGN) affect the hot atmospheres of isolated giant elliptical galaxies (gE’s), as well as those in groups and clusters of galaxies. Chandra observations of a sample of nearby gE’s show that the average power of AGN outbursts is sufficient to stop their hot atmospheres from cooling and forming stars, consistent with radio mode feedback models. The outbursts ...
متن کاملEvidence of intense hot ( ≃ 340 K ) dust in 3 CR radio galaxies
The spectra of the powerful 3CR radio galaxies present a typical distribution in the far-infrared (FIR). From the observed radio to X-ray spectral energy distribution (SED) templates, we propose to subtract the typical energy distributions of, respectively, the elliptical galaxy host and the synchrotron radiation. The resulting SED reveals that the main dust emission is well fitted by the sum o...
متن کاملInfrared-red Cores in Nearby Elliptical Galaxies
We present the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) observations for a sample of local elliptical galaxies to study later stages of AGN activities. A sample of 36 elliptical galaxies is selected from the Palomar spectroscopic survey. We detect nuclear non-stellar infrared emission in 9 of them. There is unambiguous evidence of circumnuclear dust in these 9 galaxies in their opti...
متن کاملThe Brightest Black Holes
I suggest that there are two classes of ultraluminous X–ray sources (ULXs), corresponding to super–Eddington mass inflow in two situations: (a) thermal–timescale mass transfer in high–mass X–ray binaries, and (b) long–lasting transient outbursts in low–mass X–ray binaries. These two classes are exemplified by SS433 and microquasars like GRS 1915+105 respectively. The observed ULX population is ...
